How to Verify a Water Damage Contractor in California

Before anyone starts tearing out drywall or flooring, take a few minutes to check who you are hiring. Do it for every company, including any company we connect you with.

The checks

  1. CSLB license. Restoration that includes rebuilding or repairs generally requires a license from the Contractors State License Board. Search the company at cslb.ca.gov and confirm the license is active and the name matches your estimate.
  2. Insurance. Ask for proof of general liability insurance and, if the company has employees, workers' compensation.
  3. Training. Ask whether technicians hold IICRC certifications for water damage restoration. The IICRC publishes the industry's water damage standard.
  4. Written scope. Get a written description of what will be removed, how drying will be measured and how the job is documented for your insurer.

Red flags

  • Pressure to sign an assignment of benefits or a contract on the spot.
  • No moisture readings or drying log.
  • Demolition far beyond the visibly wet area without measurements to support it.
